Steel Pan music originally emanates from the streets of Trinidad. As an attempt to emulate the western popular music to be heard on the radio, home-made tunable percussion instruments were fashioned out of anything from biscuit tins to empty oil-drums salvaged from the naval bases.

Exotic, magical rhythms with their distinctive chiming, bell-like textures took London by storm when a steel pan ensemble from the island was invited over to the UK to perform at the Festival of Britain in 1951. This jaunty, happy-go-lucky, toe-tapping concoction proved so infectious that everybody wanted to be a part of it. As a direct result, since then a great many excellent Caribbean steel pan bands have developed in the UK.

Based around Portsmouth, Sounds Of Steel is one of this growing number of such ensembles. They present an exciting and captivating blend of traditional Caribbean folk-music, calypso, ska, soca and reggae with some clever arrangements of well-known modern popular songs and tunes.

Ranging from a five-piece to a ten-piece, Sounds Of Steel can readily tailor their line-up to suit the size and style of the event. If the weather is kind, the musicians will be more than happy to perform outdoors, presenting a splendid accompaniment to a wedding reception or garden party.
